Matthias Erzberger was born here on 20 September 1875 as the eldest son of Josef and Katharina Erzberger. This Catholic family originally came from nearby Gundelfingen.

At the end of World War I and the beginning of the Weimar Republic, Matthias Erzberger played a role in determining Germany´s future. He signed the armistice treaty for the German side on 11 November 1918. In his position as German Minister of Finance from 1919-1920, he lay the foundations for the modern taxation system. Aside from this, he was involved in parliamentising the system of government in 1917 as a member of the Centre Party. Erzberger was murdered by radical right-wing officers near Bad Griesbach in the Black Forest on 26 August 1921.
