Julie and Salomon Löwenthal

Horsemarket in  Bad Cannstatt
 20 th century

Löwenthal House                       (Zwiefalter Str. 16)

The ”Löwenthal house” dates back to 1828, when it was originally a home for Simon Adler and for the teacher Liebmann Löwenthal. Later, the main office of Buttenhausen´s most important horse trading firm, ”Gebrüder Löwenthal” (the Löwenthal brothers), was located here. Salomon Löwenthal (1879-1942) was despite his religion a local councillor until 1935, certainly a unique case in Württemberg. In 1942 he and his wife Julia came to Theresienstadt, where both would later die under the inhumane conditions of a concentration camp. The house was taken over by Stuttgart city for the ”Beschäftigungs- und Bewahranstalt” (an institution for social welfare). Today it is the living quarters for Landheim Buttenhausen (see station "Castle"). The name of the house still reminds us of its former occupants, who had such an influence on the town´s development up until 1933.
