Theodor Rothschild
(1876 - 1944)

Jewish memorial –
Theodor Rothschild´s birthhouse           (centre of town)

The birthhouse of author and pedagogue Theodor Rothschild once stood on the site of this monument, which was inaugurated in 1961 for Buttenhausen´s Jewish victims of National Socialism. He was born here on 4 January 1876, son of the butcher Isak Rothschild and his wife Frieda (born Bernheimer). Rothschild was particularly known for his work as director of the Jewish orphanage ”Wilhelmspflege” in Esslingen, where he accompanied these children through the period of National Socialism. Rothschild was deported to Theresienstadt in 1942. He died there in 1944 from a lung infection and malnutrition.

Throughout his lifetime, memories of his native village were very important to Theodor Rothschild. He produced a lasting monument for the country´s Jewry, as well as for Buttenhausen itself, in the form of reading material he published for religious education lessons, some of which he even composed himself.
