Michaelskirche
(St. Michael´s church)
The
Michaelskirche, first mentioned in 1275, is most likely one of the
oldest parish churches of this region. The tracery windows in the
towers and the nave suggest that this church was erected in the
late 15th or early 16th century. The church´s
interior has been renovated several times, most recently from 1965
to 1966. The organ was inaugurated in 1995.
From
1527, the noble regional ruler of Buttenhausen´s
”reichsunmittelbar” rule (self-governing rule under the
Kaiser), possessed the right to patronage, allowing him to
influence the appointment of the parish priest. In 1596, after the
acquisition of Buttenhausen, the rulers of Gemmingen introduced
the Reformation. In the 18th and 19th
centuries Buttenhausen´s vicarage produced many important civil
servants for Wuerttemberg. These included the theologians Gustav
Ferdinand (1784-1822) and Gustav Adolf Bockshammer (1815-1900) as
well as General Otto von Haldenwang (1829-1897), in whose memory a
monument has been erected in the centre of the city.
