Site
of the former castle
Buttenhausen´s
cemetery is surrounded by the fortification wall of the former
castle, the only structural remains of this medieval / early
modern edifice; today a gate with a pointed arch has been bricked
in on the eastern side. To a large extent the history of this
castle remains a mystery. In the 14th century the town
was jointly owned by the related von Justingen and von
Gundelfingen families. It is probable that Friedrich von
Gundelfingen sold the village along with the castle in 1407; from
1409 Buttenhausen belonged to the rulers of Stein von
Klingenstein. One branch of this family also resided in the castle
in the 16th century. In 1778 the ”old castle on the
mountain”, of which one building continued to be used as a silo,
was differentiated from another castle further down, the
”Meierhaus”, which today can be found in the castle grounds.
Castles located on cliffs over valleys are characteristic of the
topography of the high Middle Ages, which can also be seen in the
neighbouring towns of Bichishausen and Hundersingen.
