School
(Heimtalstr. 21)
In
1862 the inauguration of Buttenhausen´s new primary school
building was celebrated by the entire community. The school´s
symmetrical design symbolises religious equality. The Christian
school room was located on the right, the Jewish one on the left;
both teachers lived above their respective section. The depression
in the wall by the left entrance is a reminder of the Jewish past
of this building. This space was intended for the ”Mesusa”, a
parchment scroll with quotations from the Bible, which is a
necessity in every Jewish building.
Lessons
were given here for over 100 years, until the Lautertal school was
built between Hundersingen and Buttenhausen (1966). In 1985 the
Catholics of Buttenhausen were provided with a church room in a
former neighbouring building of the school.
