The spring of Rossbach stream in the 1930´s.

Spring of Rossbach
(Wasserstetter Straße)

In the 19th century, the noble family of Weidenbach had a vault built over the spring of Rossbach. Until the foundation of a modern water supply in 1909, the people of Buttenhausen carried their water from that spring. The wall was built of limestone. That way the drinking water should be protected against pollution.

The Rossbach brook which was just 983 feet long was also used as a cattle watering and also to drive a sawmill. In the 1830s and 1840s, the gentlemen of Weidenbach tried to limit the access to the spring. With the help of their priest Ernst Haldenwang the citizens protested successfully. The vault was renewed in 1894 and again in 2001. Since 1999, it has been a protected historical site as a proof of the former nobility of Buttenhausen and showing the meaning of the Rossbach stream as a drinking water supply for the town.
